Bedford Heights welcomes childhood literacy charity Schoolreaders

December 13, 2018/0/0

Bedford Heights is delighted to welcome national charity, Schoolreaders, to the building, who have chosen to locate their Head Office here in our thriving business centre. Schoolreaders recently held an official opening event at Bedford Heights to launch their Head Office, attended by the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire and other invited guests, and we caught up with them to find out more about their work.

About Schoolreaders

We are a charity that improves childhood literacy and have just opened our head office at Bedford Heights. Schoolreaders’ vision is that every child, regardless of their background, should be given the opportunity to become a good reader and have the chance to achieve their full potential. Today we support over 7,000 children every week in primary schools across England and nearly 900 children in Bedfordshire.

How you can support Schoolreaders

On average it costs Schoolreaders just £15 to fund a weekly one-to-one reading session with a child for a whole year and we are the only national charity in the country offering a reading service to primary schools for free. We cannot do this without individual, community and business support. If you would like to join our ‘ 2019 Skydive for Schoolreaders’ (as a team or individual) or fundraise for us, please email Anna on a.bunney@schoolreaders.org or call 0330 1134127 – or come and see us in Room 412.

Become a Schoolreader Volunteer

Our reading-volunteers love their Schoolreaders experience. No qualifications are needed, just a good command of written and spoken English. Volunteers typically give 1 to 3 hours a week in term-time and Schoolreaders matches you to a local school that meets your requirements. For more information on volunteering and what we do, have a look at our website www.schoolreaders.org
